Aspirin or aspirin-containing products (e.g. bismuth subsalicylate – Pepto Bismol) should not be administered to any student with a confirmed or suspected illness of influenza virus infection aged 18 years old and younger due to the risk of Reyes syndrome. For relief of fever, other anti-pyretic medications are recommended such as acetaminophen or non steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Check ingredient labels on over-the-counter cold and flu medications to see if they contain aspirin.
- Teenagers with the flu can take medicines without aspirin, such as acetaminophen (Tylenol®) and ibuprofen (Advil®, Motrin®, Nuprin®), to relieve symptoms.
- Children younger than 4 years of age should not be given over-the-counter cold medications without first speaking with a healthcare provider.
All Families: If your child receives a vaccination please bring a copy of the shot record or a receipt listing the vaccine to me so the health record can be updated.
6th grade parents-your student will need a TDAP and MCV shot within two weeks of turning 11years old when they are 6th graders. The state has changed it's policies and these shots may now be given prior to 11 years but no earlier than 10 years old so ask your doctor at your next office visit. Please show proof of TDAP and MCV shots ASAP after your child's 11th birthday. All students must also show proof of at least one Varicella vaccine or a signed statement that the student has had Chickenpox.
